Tips on how to beat the heat

Man and woman keeping hydrated by drinking water

Health leaders at NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough are urging communities to follow simple heatwave advice to stay safe and well, as the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office have issued a Level 4 - Emergency Heat Health Alert for much of England including the East between Monday and Wednesday next week.

The local NHS is urging people to look out for those near them - particularly if you have relatives or neighbours who are elderly, have underlying conditions or who live alone. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding excess alcohol, and remind your loved ones to drink plenty of fluids too.

During the hot weather it's best to stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm if you can, as that's when UV rays tend to be the strongest. Close curtains in rooms that face the sun and remember not to leave loved ones or pets in parked vehicles.

There is the risk that people can experience heat exhaustion, in very serious situations, this can become heat stroke.

You should call 999 if you or someone you are with is showing any of the signs of heatstroke:

  • feeling unwell after 30 minutes of resting in a cool place and drinking plenty of water

  • not sweating even while feeling too hot

  • a high temperature of 40C or above
