Revalidation for nurses and midwives

From April 2016 all nurses and midwives are required to undertake a revalidation of professional practice every three years. This is the process by which nurses and midwives demonstrate that they are practicing safely and are meeting the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code.

What is the NMC Code?

The Code: Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics for Nurses and Midwives (2015) is a set of key principles that should underpin the practice of all nurses and midwives, and remind them of their professional responsibilities. It should be used to guide daily practice for all nurses and midwives. Alongside other standards, guidance and advice from the NMC, the code should be used to support professional development.

What does this mean in practice?

All nurses and midwives who are registered with the NMC and who are CCG employees are expected to revalidate from April 2016; the actual renewal date is available via the NMC website.

The CCG will ensure there are effective systems and processes in place to support registrants who are employed by the CCG. This includes:

  • Links to appraisal and other HR processes
  • Training for registrants and confirmers
  • Facilitating support and information sharing between registrants

The CCG also has a responsibility for ensuring there are similarly effective processes in place in all CCG-commissioned services.

Who can I contact?

If you have any questions please get in touch with the CCG's HR team via capccg.hr@nhs.net.

Where can I find up-to-date information?

The NMC has a dedicated microsite, which is continually updated with information as well as practical tools, forms and discussions.
