Could you make a difference

This Christmas, could you make a difference for a local child?

As we head into the festive season, many of us are looking forward to the things that make Christmas feel special, time with family, cosy days at home, presents under the tree, and moments of calm after a busy year.

But for many children and young people in care, Christmas can feel very different.

  • Some won’t be spending the holidays with their family.
  • Some won’t have the traditions many of us take for granted.
  • Some simply won’t feel that sense of belonging that makes this time of year magical.

Take a look at the new fostering “Create Memories this Christmas” film, which tells the story of a local couple who had lost the joy and warmth of Christmas. Their lives and their Christmas, are transformed after they welcome three foster children into their home, rediscovering the true spirit of the season through laughter, togetherness and a renewed sense of purpose.

Could 2026 be the year you consider fostering?

At Peterborough City Council, we are incredibly proud of our staff. Every day, you make a difference through your roles, your compassion and your commitment to supporting our communities. But some of you may also be in a position to make an even more direct impact on a child’s life by fostering.

Fostering isn’t ‘one size fits all’. There are different types to suit different lifestyles, jobs and commitments and you might be surprised at how well fostering could fit into your life.

Different roles, different fostering options

Office-based staff - If you work regular hours and have a stable routine, you might be a great fit for Link fostering (support for children with disabilities), supporting teens aged 16+, time-limited care for children needing short-term support. These roles offer structure and predictability, perfect for those who can provide consistency at home.

Frontline staff - Your experience working with children and families may make you well-suited to short-break fostering, emergency care, or even long-term fostering, depending on your home situation. Your insight, empathy and professional understanding can be a huge asset.

Shift-based or flexible workers - If your schedule varies, you could be a fit for emergency fostering, sleepover care, Link, fostering and time-limited homes. These roles provide vital breathing space for full-time carers and stability for children. There truly is a type of fostering for almost every lifestyle.
