Dying Matters Week

text: 'dying matters week'

Dying Matters Week is taking place from 6-12 May and local partners are coming together to highlight the services available for people locally who might need support with palliative, end of life care or grief.

The national Dying Matters Week campaign aims to open up conversations around death and dying. This year’s theme focuses on the language that we use, and conversations we have, around death and dying with healthcare professionals. As part of the week local partners NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough ICB, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), Arthur Rank Hospice Charity and Sue Ryder want to highlight two brilliant services which are available to local people.

NHS 111 palliative and end of life care service - The Palliative Care Hub is a free telephone service in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough for people who need help living with a life-limiting illness. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is for patients, families, carers, and healthcare staff who might require palliative or end of life care advice for themselves or their patients. Just call 111 and select option 4 for the 111 access to the palliative hub.

Grief Kind Space – Informal peer-to-peer bereavement support in Peterborough run by Sue Ryder. The space aims to reduce the isolation and loneliness felt by many people following a bereavement will be held at the multi-cultural Gladstone Park Community Centre every Wednesday from 10am until midday.

Hayley Stock,  Macmillan Palliative and End of Life Care Transformation Lead at Cambridgeshire & Peterborough ICS, said, “Dying Matters Week is a great opportunity to encourage people to talk about death and dying, and highlight two brilliant services we have here in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Most of us will experience losing people we love and care for during our lifetime, and we want local people to know that support is available.”
