Fenland men’s mental health

A project set up in Wisbech a year ago to help men’s mental health is encouraging those who might need support and a friendly ear to join their group.

Alright Mate? Fenland was launched at the end of January 2025 as fortnightly peer support meetings for any local men who wanted help or support with their mental health. Over the past year the group has grown with over 50 people attending fortnightly peer meetings and quarterly campfire meetups. Alright Mate? is for men who are over the age of 18 and offers a friendly and welcoming space where men can come together and talk.

The group has been able to continue thanks to funding from CPSL MIND, Cambridgeshire County Council, Wisbech Town Council, Wisbech Lions Club and Elizabeth Wright Foundation. Some of the feedback received so far was that the group helps stop people feel so isolated; it’s good for realising people are not on their own; it helps with social skills and confidence; and has same minded people who can help people get along better mentally.

The group was set up in response to data showing an increase in referrals into mental health services in the area, as well as mental health for men being one of the top patient needs identified by social prescribing teams. After running for it’s first year, the group is now hoping to reach even more local men who might be interested in support for their mental health.

John Rooke, Managing Director at North Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Care Partnership, part of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Integrated Care System, said: “We’re delighted that so many local men have attended the sessions so far and it’s great to see how much it’s helping them in a range of ways from reducing isolation to building confidence.

Wknow there are more men in Wisbech who Alright Mate? could help. The project offers a welcoming and non-judgemental environment for anyone. No referral or booking is needed.
