The local NHS is urging those eligible for a spring COVID-19 vaccine to come forward, as figures published on 12 May 2025 show almost four in ten eligible people in the East of England have received their jabs (40.3%).

Local data shows that uptake locally for the vaccination in Wisbech is just 28% and with Fenland at just 41% of the eligible population having their vaccination so far. And in Peterborough just 31.8% of the eligible population have had their vaccination so far.

With just under six weeks to go, the NHS is reminding those at highest risk of getting seriously unwell if they catch the virus, to come forward for their free vaccination and top up their protection this spring. Eligible people are:

  • are aged 75 or over (including those who will be 75 by 17 June 2025)
  • are aged 6 months to 74 years and have a weakened immune system because of a health condition or treatment
  • live in a care home for older adults.

In the current COVID-19 booster programme around 115,400 people in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Royston are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination this spring, with approximately 53,000 vaccinations given so far across the area.

Cali Makewell, Integrated Vaccination Service Lead at NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough ICB, said: “With the current warmer weather it might not feel like the right time of the year to have a COVID-19 vaccination, but regardless of the time of year COVID-19 remains a serious and dangerous illness to those most at risk.

“If you’ve not got around to having your vaccination this spring, then it’s not too late. You can book online, through the NHS app or by calling 119 for an appointment.”

There is a selection of clinics available across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, some offering walk-in sessions or bookable appointments, as well as quiet clinics for those who need them.
