Veterans urged to access help

In recognition of Armed Forces Day, teams at NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough are encouraging our local veterans to let their doctor know they have served in our Armed Forces, so that they can get the help and support they need.
Over 95% of GP practices in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Royston have signed up to the Veteran Friendly Practice accreditation scheme. Practices signed up to the scheme have a Clinical Lead within their practice who are trained to support the physical and mental health of veterans. Each clinical lead shares their insights and knowledge with their practice colleagues so that the whole practice can support those who have served in the Armed Forces.
Veterans can face specific health challenges, from physical health problems caused by their time in service to mental health problems such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The NHS is encouraging all 29,000 local veterans to register with a GP practice and let them know their status as soon as they leave the armed forces, rather than waiting until they have a medical issue that needs treatment. Getting registered as soon as possible will help veterans get help quickly and effectively when they do need it.
Dr Gary Howsam, Chief Clinical Improvement Officer with NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough and a local GP, said:
“Our Armed Forces are here to support and protect us all every day. So when a member of the Armed Services leaves the service, we want to make sure we are there for them in turn, with the right support for their mental and physical health.”
“With over 95% of our local practices signed up to the Veteran Friendly Practice scheme, there is lots of help available. If you are a veteran, please register with a GP practice and let them know about your status so that you can access the right care for you.”
Thousands of GP practices across the country are Veteran Friendly accredited. GP practices can sign up to the scheme through the Royal College of GPs (RCGP).
